Feast Day: August 15
Saint Simplician of Milan, also known as Simpliciano, was born around the year 320 in Rome, Italy. Raised in a Christian family, he grew up with a deep devotion to the Catholic faith. Simplician dedicated his life to teaching and catechizing others, becoming a renowned teacher of the faith. As a priest, Simplician played a significant role in the conversion of two notable figures in Christian history – Saint Alipius of Tagaste and Saint Augustine of Hippo. Augustine, in particular, held Simplician in high regard, describing him as the "spiritual father of my soul." Simplician was a mentor and advisor to Augustine, providing him with guidance and support on his spiritual journey. Augustine even sought Simplician's approval and insights on his writings. In recognition of his wisdom and leadership, Simplician was appointed as the Archbishop of Milan, Italy, despite already being in his 70s. He served in this role for approximately three to four years, leaving a lasting impact on the archdiocese. Simplician formed a close friendship with Saint Ambrose of Milan, who greatly valued his counsel and friendship. Simplician's influence extended beyond Milan, as he corresponded extensively with Pope Anastasius I and bishops in Africa and Gaul. Unfortunately, none of these writings have survived to this day. However, Simplician's teachings and guidance were well-respected by those who received them. One unique aspect of Simplician's devotion was his unwavering commitment to wearing a black leather belt. According to accounts, Saint Monica, the mother of Saint Augustine, had a vision of the Blessed Virgin Mary. In this vision, Monica saw Simplician wearing a distinctive black belt. Inspired by this vision, the belt became an integral part of the habit of the Augustinian order. Saint Simplician of Milan passed away around the year 401 in Milan, Liguria, Italy. His exemplary life and profound impact on the Catholic Church earned him a place in sainthood. Although Simplician was canonized before the formal canonization process existed, his veneration as a saint predates the establishment of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints. Today, Saint Simplician is honored on various feast days throughout the Catholic calendar. He is commemorated on August 15th and also on August 14th in the Archdiocese of Milan, Italy. Some calendars may celebrate his feast day on August 16th. While no specific patronages are associated with Saint Simplician, his life and teachings continue to inspire and guide Catholics around the world. His unwavering commitment to spreading the Gospel, nurturing the faith of others, and his close relationship with Saint Augustine make him a revered figure in Christian history.
