Biography

Saint Simon of Mount Mercury, also known as Simone, was a revered tenth-century monk in Calabria, Italy. As an abbot, he dedicated his life to the pursuit of spirituality and the spread of the Christian faith. Simon's strong conviction led him on a remarkable journey to North Africa. The captors demanded that Simon and the other prisoners renounce their Christian faith, and when they steadfastly refused, the captors prepared to beat them mercilessly. Through the grace of God and Simon's profound faith, a miraculous intervention occurred. As the captors were about to inflict harm upon the prisoners, they suddenly became paralyzed. Witnessing this divine intervention, Simon offered a fervent prayer, beseeching God for mercy and healing. Miraculously, the power of his prayer reversed the paralysis and restored the captors' health. Overwhelmed by this extraordinary display of God's power, the Saracens were deeply moved and decided to release Simon and his brother monks. This awe-inspiring event marked a turning point in Simon's life. In his later years, he made the decision to depart from his monastery and live as a hermit on Mount Mercury in Calabria.
