Feast Day: August 21
Saint Sidonius Apollinaris, also known as Caius Sollius Apollinaris Sidonius and Sidonio Apollinare, was born around 423 in Lugdunum, Gaul (modern Lyon, France). He was born into the imperial Roman nobility as the son of Apollinaris, who served as the Prefect of Gaul. In his early years, Saint Sidonius Apollinaris pursued a military career and eventually became a soldier. He married Papianilla, the daughter of Emperor Avitus, around 452, and together they had a son named Apollinaris. In 457, Saint Sidonius Apollinaris was arrested for political reasons, but he was treated fairly during his imprisonment. After his release, he managed to climb the ranks of the new regime and achieve great success. He served as the Urban Prefect of Rome in 468 and 469 and held the prestigious titles of Roman Patrician and Roman Senator. Despite his political accomplishments, Saint Sidonius Apollinaris was reluctantly appointed as the bishop of Clermont, France. This appointment was mainly due to political considerations rather than his theological qualifications. However, he wholeheartedly dedicated himself to his role as a bishop and served the Church with sincerity. In 474, the Goths under Alaric took Clermont, and Saint Sidonius Apollinaris was imprisoned for his role in defending the city against the invaders. He was later released and returned to his see, where he remained until his death. Saint Sidonius Apollinaris was not only known for his political and religious roles but also for his talents as a writer and poet. His poetry especially played a significant role in advancing his political career. Despite his elevated status and significant wealth, Saint Sidonius Apollinaris was known for his generosity towards the poor and his support of monasteries. Saint Sidonius Apollinaris died around 480 in Clermont, France, leaving behind a legacy of political achievements, religious devotion, and literary contributions. While he is not officially recognized as a patron saint for any specific cause or group, his life and teachings continue to inspire many who seek guidance in their spiritual journey.
