Death: February 1, 23
Saint Serenus The Gardener, also known as Serenus of Billom, Serenus of Sirmio, Serenus of Sirmium, Cerneuf, Sereno, Serenusa, Sireno, Sinero, Sirenatus, was a revered figure in the Catholic tradition. Born in Greece, he abandoned his home and people to lead a life of solitude as a hermit in Sirmium, Pannonia (modern Hungary). It was here that he dedicated himself to prayer and cultivating a garden filled with an assortment of fruits and herbs. One notable incident occurred when Saint Serenus encountered a woman and her daughters walking in his garden around noon. Concerned for their well-being, he kindly recommended that they withdraw and return in the cooler evening hours. However, it seems that his words were misinterpreted as a reprimand, and the woman's husband, an imperial guard, sought revenge for this perceived insult. Convinced of his wife's complaint, the guard convinced Emperor Maximian to take legal action against Saint Serenus. Subsequently, Saint Serenus was arrested and brought to trial. During the proceedings, he simply reiterated what he had said to the woman in the garden, clarifying his intentions. As a result, he was immediately acquitted of any wrongdoing. However, the judge found his demeanor suspicious and suspected him of being a Christian, which was against the law at the time. When questioned about his faith, Saint Serenus openly admitted his commitment to Christianity. This confession led to his sentencing, with the court ordering him to sacrifice to pagan gods. Yet, Saint Serenus steadfastly refused to renounce his Christian beliefs and refused to make the pagan sacrifices. As a consequence, he was condemned to death. Saint Serenus The Gardener's story gained significant popularity throughout history due to the injustice he faced as a result of the ruling class's arrogance. Many people sympathized with him as a simple man brought to ruin through no fault of his own. Moreover, his story resonated with writers and preachers who utilized the metaphor of the garden as a representation of a proper Christian life. Although there is no specific artistic representation attributed to Saint Serenus The Gardener, his significance in the Catholic faith remains substantial. While he was not formally canonized by the Church, as his sainthood predates the standard process of canonization, he is venerated as a saint in Pre-Congregation times. Saint Serenus The Gardener is celebrated on various feast days. In the Roman calendar, his feast day is commemorated on 23 February, while in the Greek calendar, it falls on 25 February. Additionally, in Billom, France, his feast day is observed on 10 May. Saint Serenus The Gardener holds patronage over bachelors, falsely accused individuals, and gardeners. His life serves as an inspiration for those facing false accusations and injustice, reminding them to stay true to their faith even in the face of adversity.
