Biography

Saint Senatro of Missanello, also known as Senatro the Calabrian or Senator, was born in the early 10th century to the noble Sicilian family of Giovanni and Tebidia. He was the younger brother of Saint Luca of Demenna, who was also renowned for his holiness and piety. As a young man, Senatro felt a strong calling to dedicate his life to God and pursue a path of spiritual devotion. He entered the Basilian monastery of San Elia in Missanello, Italy, where he became a monk. Though the details of his life in the monastery are not well-documented, his reputation for piety and holiness quickly spread, earning him the admiration and devotion of the local community. Throughout his life, Senatro exemplified the virtues of humility, prayer, and charity. He was known for his deep contemplation of the divine mysteries, spending long hours in solitary prayer and meditation. Senatro's devotion to God extended beyond the confines of the monastery, as he actively sought to serve and help those in need, particularly the poor and marginalized. His selflessness and unconditional love for others made Senatro a source of inspiration and comfort to the people of Missanello and the surrounding areas. He became renowned for his wisdom and spiritual guidance, as many sought his counsel and sought his prayers for various needs. Saint Senatro's earthly journey came to an end around the year 1000 when he passed away of natural causes. Following his death, his relics were enshrined in Missanello, where they continue to be venerated by pilgrims to this day. Recognizing the immense impact of Senatro's life and his profound holiness, Pope Eugene III officially canonized him on August 1, 1151, confirming his cultus and recognizing his status as a saint in the Catholic Church. In doing so, the Pope acknowledged Senatro's exceptional virtues and the powerful intercession attributed to him by the faithful.
