Biography

Saint Sancha of Portugal, also known as Sancha of Alenquer, was born around 1180 in Portugal. She was the daughter of King Sancho I of Portugal and the sister of Blessed Mafilda and Saint Theresa of Portugal. As a princess, Sancha enjoyed a privileged upbringing, but she chose to dedicate her life to serving others through acts of charity and piety. Sancha was greatly influenced by the teachings of the Franciscans and Dominicans in Portugal. She actively supported these religious orders and even helped Franciscan missionaries who were en route to Morocco. Inspired by their way of life, Sancha sought to emulate their humility and devotion to God. One of Sancha's most significant contributions was the founding of a Cistercian monastery in Coimbra, Portugal. This monastery, known as the Monastery of Celas, became her spiritual home, and she spent the remainder of her life in a cell within its walls. Here, Sancha dedicated herself to a life of prayer, penance, and contemplation. Sancha was revered for her profound spirituality and her fervent devotion to God. Her life in the monastery was marked by acts of charity towards the poor and a deep commitment to the well-being of her fellow sisters in the religious community. Sancha's unwavering faith and dedication to serving others earned her the respect and admiration of many. Saint Sancha of Portugal died on 11 April 1229 in her cell at the Monastery of Celas, Coimbra. She was buried in the abbey at Lorvão, Portugal. Her exemplary life and reputation for holiness led to her canonization on 10 May 1705 by Pope Clement XI, who confirmed her cultus. Though Saint Sancha does not have a specific patronage, her life serves as an inspiration to all those who seek to live a life of selfless service, charity, and devotion to God. Her feast days are celebrated on 11 April, 20 June (alongside her sisters Blessed Mafilda and Saint Theresa of Portugal), and 13 March and 17 March on some calendars. Saint Sancha of Portugal, through her humble and selfless life, continues to touch the lives of believers as a beloved example of faith and charity.
