Biography

Saint Salaun of Leseven, also known as Salomon, was a humble and devout man who lived during the 14th century in a forest clearing outside Leseven, Brittany, France. He gained recognition for his simple lifestyle, poverty, and unworldliness, which led people to perceive him as the village idiot. However, it was only with time that they discovered the depth of his spirituality and the profound impact he had on those around him. Born into poverty, Salaun chose to live as a beggar in the forest clearing outside Leseven. Despite his impoverished state, he greeted everyone he met with the expression "Ave Maria!" – a testament to his strong devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. Additionally, he spent his days singing beautiful Marian hymns, which echoed through the woods and touched the hearts of all who heard them. For many years, Salaun was misunderstood and dismissed as an eccentric. However, as people began to recognize the sincerity and purity of his heart, they realized that his simplicity and detachment from worldly possessions were deliberate choices made to focus on his spiritual development. Legend has it that Salaun died in 1358 of natural causes. When his body was found, an extraordinary sight awaited those who discovered him. A white lily, with the words "Ave Maria" written in gold lettering, was said to have miraculously grown from his mouth. This sign was seen as a divine confirmation of his devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. To honor his memory, the villagers buried him in the very forest clearing where he had lived his humble existence. Over time, the Basilica of Notre-Dame du Folgoët was built over Salaun's grave, becoming a place of pilgrimage and veneration for those seeking solace and spiritual guidance. It is believed that Salaun's intercession has brought about numerous miraculous healings and conversions for those who visit his resting place. The spring of water that Salaun had relied upon during his life was further sanctified when the people channeled it through the church. This act symbolized the interconnectedness of his spiritual journey and the deep love he had for the Blessed Virgin Mary. Although no specific patronage has been attributed to Saint Salaun of Leseven, his exemplary life serves as an inspiration for all who strive to live a life of profound faith, simplicity, and devotion. His story reminds us that true holiness can often be found in the most unexpected of places and individuals. Today, his memory is cherished and his intercession sought by those who recognize the power of his spiritual journey.
