Biography

Saint Romanus of Subiaco, also known as Saint Romanus of Auxerre, was a revered figure in Catholicism during the early sixth century. Born sometime in the late 5th century, the exact details of his birth and early life remain largely unknown. However, historical documents suggest that he dedicated his life to God and chose the path of monasticism.

Saint Romanus started his spiritual journey as a monk near Subiaco, Italy. Subiaco, located about 70 kilometers east of Rome, was known for its rugged terrain and isolated caves, which attracted hermits and monks seeking solitude and the opportunity for contemplation. It was in this secluded region that Saint Benedict of Nursia, the father of Western monasticism, himself lived as a cave hermit for around three years. Saint Romanus was fortunate enough to become a friend and companion to Saint Benedict during this time, supporting him in his ascetic life and sharing in his spiritual teachings.
