Feast Day: May 15
Saint Rheticus of Autun, also known as Rheticius, Reticius, Rhétice, and Reticio, was a Gallo-Roman bishop who lived during the 4th century. He was born in the region of Gaul, which is modern-day France, and became widely known for his profound knowledge of Scripture. Both Saints Augustine of Hippo and Jerome wrote about his profound understanding of the scriptures, attesting to his reputation as a learned and esteemed bishop. Very little is known about Saint Rheticus' early life and background. However, it is believed that he received his education in Autun, a city in central France. He dedicated himself to the study and understanding of the Scriptures, delving deep into the teachings of the Church Fathers and the writings of early Christian theologians. Rheticus' exceptional knowledge and insight into Scripture led to his appointment as the Bishop of Autun around the year 310. As a bishop, he guided and shepherded his diocese with great wisdom and care, preaching the Gospel and teaching the faithful. His intellectual prowess and meticulous study of Scripture made him highly regarded as an authoritative figure in matters of faith. Saint Augustine of Hippo, one of the most influential theologians in early Christianity, referred to Rheticus in his renowned work "Confessions". Augustine acknowledged Rheticus as an esteemed teacher who had a significant impact on his own theological education. Similarly, Saint Jerome, known for translating the Bible into Latin (known as the Vulgate), praised Rheticus for his deep understanding of the Scriptures and his insightful interpretations. Saint Rheticus' exact contributions to theology and his role in the Church remain somewhat unclear due to the limited historical records available. Nevertheless, his reputation as a highly respected and knowledgeable bishop is well-documented through the works of Augustine and Jerome. Saint Rheticus died in the year 334 of natural causes. He was venerated as a saint by the early Christian community, although his canonization took place before the establishment of formal canonization procedures. Consequently, he is recognized as a saint by the Catholic Church under the category of Pre-Congregation saints. While there is no specific representation of Saint Rheticus documented, he is honored and remembered on May 15th as well as July 20th in some calendars. However, he is not commonly invoked as a patron saint for any particular cause or profession. Though the historical records of Saint Rheticus are limited, his life exemplifies the importance of deep Scriptural study and theological knowledge. His impact on notable figures such as Augustine of Hippo and Jerome is evidence of his profound understanding of the Sacred Scriptures. Saint Rheticus remains a revered figure in the early Christian Church and an inspiration for those seeking to deepen their understanding of the Christian faith.
