Saint Restituta of Carthage

Biography

Saint Restituta of Carthage, also known as Restituta of Africa or Restituta of Teniza, was a courageous and faithful Catholic martyr who lived during the time of the persecutions under Emperor Diocletian. She was born in Africa, in an area that is now modern-day Tunisia. Although not much is known about her early life, it is believed that she came from a devout Christian family. During the reign of Diocletian, the Emperor issued edicts that aimed to eradicate Christianity and persecute its followers. Restituta, being a fervent believer, refused to renounce her faith despite the immense pressure to do so. As a result, she became a target of the oppressive regime and was subjected to severe torture due to her refusal to worship pagan gods. Ultimately, Saint Restituta met a gruesome fate. She was taken aboard a boat and sentenced to be burned alive for her steadfast commitment to Christ. However, divine intervention led the boat to drift off course and it grounded on the island of Ischia near Naples, Italy. It is believed that she was executed there by burning, during the year 304. Saint Restituta's relics are believed to be housed in the Cathedral of Naples, making her an important figure of veneration in the region. Her feast day is celebrated on May 17th. Although there are no specific representations attributed to Saint Restituta, she is commonly depicted in traditional Catholic imagery as a martyr holding various symbols associated with her martyrdom or indication of her faith. Saint Restituta was canonized before the formal establishment of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, also known as Pre-Congregation. As a result, her official canonization is considered pre-congregation, which means it took place before the current process of canonization was implemented. In addition to being venerated as a courageous martyr, Saint Restituta is regarded as the patron saint of Lacco Ameno, a town on the island of Ischia where she was executed. The people of Lacco Ameno continue to honor and seek her intercession for protection and guidance. Saint Restituta's life is a testament to the strength and resilience of those who remain faithful to their religious beliefs in the face of persecution. Her memory serves as an inspiring example of unwavering devotion to Christ and the sacrifices made by early Christians for the sake of their faith.
