Biography

Saint Relindis of Eyck, also known as Relindis of Maaseik, Renilde, Renildis, Renula, or Renule, was a nun and renowned artist who lived during the 8th century. She is celebrated for her artistic talents in painting and embroidery, as well as her dedication to her religious vocation as an abbess. Relindis and her sister, Herlindis, were born in the region of Valenciennes in northern France. Inspired by their deep faith, both sisters decided to consecrate their lives to God and joined the religious community in Valenciennes. Relindis, in particular, showed a natural inclination towards artistic expression. Her paintings and embroidery were highly regarded for their quality and beauty. Her talent not only enriched the spiritual life of the community but also attracted attention from beyond the monastery walls. After some time, Relindis and Herlindis were called to establish a new religious community in Maaseik, a town in present-day Belgium. The sisters accepted this mission with joy, seeing it as an opportunity to spread the Gospel and offer their artistic gifts in service to God. Relindis was eventually appointed as the abbess of the monastery in Maaseik. Under her leadership, the religious community thrived, nurturing the spiritual growth of its members and serving the surrounding region. As an artistic abbess, Relindis continued to use her talents not only for the embellishment of sacred spaces but also to teach and inspire others. Throughout her life, Relindis exemplified the virtues of faith, humility, and selflessness. Her commitment to the monastic life and her dedication to her artwork stood as powerful examples for those around her. Saint Relindis of Eyck died around the year 750 in Tongres, Brabant, Astrasia (modern Belgium) of natural causes. Her legacy as a holy woman and an accomplished artist has been recognized and honored by the Church, although she was canonized before the formal establishment of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints. Today, Saint Relindis is venerated on February 6th, her feast day. Although not associated with any specific patronage, she continues to inspire artists and individuals seeking to deepen their faith through creativity and devotion. Her life serves as a reminder that artistic talents can be used to glorify God and enrich the spiritual life of the Church.
