Biography

Saint Raimundus Li Quanzhen, also known as Rimen or Li Quanzhen Raimundus, was a married layman who lived in the apostolic vicariate of Southeastern Zhili, China, during the late 19th century. He is recognized as a martyr who suffered during the Boxer Rebellion. Born around 1841 in Chentuncun, Jiaohe, Hebei, China, Raimundus Li Quanzhen embraced the Catholic faith and lived as a devoted follower of Christ. He was married and deeply committed to his family and community. Raimundus led a devout life, and his faith played a central role in all his actions. During the Boxer Rebellion, which took place from 1899 to 1901, anti-Christian sentiments and violence against Catholics became prevalent in China. Raimundus Li Quanzhen found himself in the midst of this tumultuous period. Despite the dangers and risks involved, he did not waver in his faith but remained steadfast and committed to his Christian beliefs. Unfortunately, his unwavering commitment led Raimundus to become a target of violence. On June 30, 1900, in his hometown of Chentuncun, Jiaohe, Hebei, he was brutally beaten to death due to his faith and refusal to renounce his Catholicism. His martyrdom served as a powerful testimony to his unyielding devotion to Christ. Recognizing his heroic witness and sacrifice, Pope Pius XII proclaimed Raimundus Li Quanzhen a martyr on February 22, 1955, through a decree. This act of recognition elevated him to the status of veneration among the Catholic faithful. On April 17, 1955, Pope Pius XII further honored him by beatifying him, acknowledging the exceptional virtues that he exhibited throughout his life. Finally, on October 1, 2000, Raimundus Li Quanzhen was canonized as a saint by Pope John Paul II. This canonization affirmed his sanctity and his intercessory role within the Catholic Church. Though he is not associated with a specific patronage, Saint Raimundus Li Quanzhen's example of fidelity and courage can serve as an inspiration for laypeople and martyrs alike. His feast day is celebrated on June 30th each year. Saint Raimundus Li Quanzhen's life serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by countless individuals during times of persecution. His unwavering faith and ultimate martyrdom stand as a testament to the power of belief even in the face of extreme adversity.
