Biography

Saint Protogenes of Syria, also known as Protogenes of Harran or Protogene, was a priest in Edessa during the Arian persecutions of the Roman emperor Valens in circa 370. Amidst the persecution, the Catholic bishop of Edessa, Barsete, was sent into exile, prompting Protogene and a fellow priest named Eulogius to assume leadership of the Christian community in his absence. However, their courageous stand for the faith led to their own exile to the Thebaid region of Egypt. During his time in exile, Protogene founded a school and became renowned for his ability to convert many of the local pagans to Christianity. His persuasive teachings were further accentuated by his healing miracles, which served as a testament to the power and truth of the Christian faith. As word of these miraculous events spread, more and more individuals were drawn to the faith, captivated by the unwavering dedication and spiritual prowess of Saint Protogenes. In 378, the emperor Valens passed away, and Protogenes seized the opportunity to return to Edessa. His recall was facilitated by the new emperor, Theodosius, who held a more favorable stance towards Christianity. Upon his return, Protogenes resumed his priestly duties, steadfastly guiding and nurturing the Christian community in Edessa. Later on, Protogenes was appointed as the Bishop of Harran, a city located in Osroena, Mesopotamia (now Carrhae, Syria). As a bishop, Protogenes continued to exemplify his unwavering commitment to the faith, providing spiritual guidance and leadership to the faithful in his jurisdiction.
