Biography

Saint Protasius Chong Kukbo, also known as Jeong Guk-Bo, was born in 1799 in Songdo, Gyeonggi-do, South Korea. He lived during a time when Christianity was met with intense persecution in Korea. Despite these challenging circumstances, Protasius Chong Kukbo remained faithful to his Christian beliefs. Protasius was a married layman, living in the apostolic vicariate of Korea. However, there came a point in his life when he renounced Christianity. It is not known what circumstances led him to such a decision, but he later regained his faith, recognizing the truth of the Catholic Church. This moment of conversion marked a turning point in his life. As a devout Catholic, Protasius Chong Kukbo faced numerous challenges and hardships. He openly professed his faith, which caught the attention of the Korean authorities. The government at the time was strongly opposed to the spread of Christianity, viewing it as a threat to their power and influence. Protasius was arrested and imprisoned for his refusal to renounce his newfound faith. While in prison, he endured severe torture and persecution, yet he remained steadfast in his devotion to Christ. Despite the immense suffering he endured, Protasius refused to abandon his faith and remained a devout Catholic until his last breath. On May 20, 1839, Protasius Chong Kukbo was executed in Seoul Prison for his unwavering refusal to renounce Christianity. His martyrdom emphasizes his unyielding love for Christ and his commitment to his beliefs, even in the face of extreme adversity. His remarkable example of faith and courage did not go unnoticed. Almost a century later, on May 9, 1925, Pope Pius XI recognized his martyrdom and declared him venerable. This acknowledgment was followed by his beatification on July 5, 1925, also by Pope Pius XI. Finally, on May 6, 1984, Pope John Paul II canonized Protasius Chong Kukbo as a saint, recognizing him as a role model for believers in Korea and beyond. His canonization highlighted the enduring impact of his life and martyrdom as a testament to the power of faith and the strength of conviction. Today, Saint Protasius Chong Kukbo is venerated for his unwavering faith, his defiance of persecution, and his martyrdom. Though his patronage is less known, his example continues to inspire and guide Catholics in their own personal journeys of faith.
