Biography

Saint Prosper of Reggio, also known as Prosper of Aquitaine, was born around the year 403 in Aquitaine, modern-day France. From an early age, Prosper displayed exceptional intellectual abilities and was particularly drawn to the works of Saint Augustine of Hippo. He immersed himself in studying the writings of this revered Doctor of the Church, becoming a noteworthy student of Augustine's theology.

As a young adult, Prosper relocated from Aquitaine to the region of Provence and settled near Marseille. This area was plagued by various heresies that threatened the integrity of the Catholic faith. Despite being a layman, Prosper devoted himself to combating these heresies and guiding people towards a more profound understanding of the truth.

Renowned for his holiness and purity of life, Prosper dedicated himself to the conversion of heretics. His efforts were so impactful that he occasionally organized pilgrimages to Rome, where heretics would have the opportunity to encounter the Pope and learn directly from him. Prosper's intense desire to bring people back to the true faith showed his deep compassion and commitment to serving others.

In 440, Prosper was appointed as the secretary to Pope Saint Leo the Great. Embracing this position, Prosper used it as a platform to spread the teachings of the Church and defend against the heresy known as semi-Pelagianism. He firmly upheld the importance of God's grace and the necessity of divine intervention in the process of salvation, countering erroneous beliefs that human beings could earn their own salvation through their own merits.

Throughout his life, Saint Prosper of Reggio demonstrated unwavering faith and tireless dedication to the Catholic Church. His theological expertise and gift for persuasive argumentation made him a formidable opponent of heresy. Prosper's works not only defended the true teachings of the Church but also provided invaluable insights into the discernment of God's grace and the relationship between divine sovereignty and human freedom.

Saint Prosper of Reggio died of natural causes around the year 460, leaving behind a legacy of theological writings and a profound impact on the Catholic Church. Although not formally canonized in the pre-congregation era, his holiness and contribution to the Church's teachings continue to be recognized and venerated. Saint Prosper is celebrated on June 25th, formerly July 7th, and November 24th in the Diocese of Reggio Emilia-Guastalla, Italy, where his patronage is still esteemed. His life serves as an inspiration for all those who strive to defend and uphold the true teachings of the Catholic faith.
