Biography

Saint Probus of Side, also known as Saint Probus of Anazarbus, was a Christian martyr who lived during the time of the persecutions of Galerius and Diocletian. Not much is known about his early life, but he was born in Side, Pamphylia, and later became a devout follower of Christianity. During this turbulent period of Roman history, Christians were subjected to severe persecution for refusing to renounce their faith and worship the Roman gods. Saint Probus found himself at the center of this persecution as he openly professed his Christian beliefs. He was tried and tortured in several towns, namely Tarsus, Mopsuestia, and Anazarbus in Cilicia. Local Christians in each town documented the examinations and abuse he endured, giving us a glimpse into his incredible devotion and unwavering faith in the face of immense suffering. Despite the tortures inflicted upon him, Saint Probus remained steadfast and resolute in his commitment to his Christian beliefs. He refused to renounce his faith or worship the Roman gods, even when offered the opportunity to spare his own life. Ultimately, Saint Probus met his martyrdom in the year 304. He was beheaded in the amphitheater of Anazarbus, a city in Cilicia. His body was left to be devoured by animals, as was the custom for executed criminals. However, local Christians managed to recover his body and gave him a proper burial, honoring his sacrifice and sanctity. Reflecting his steadfastness in the face of persecution and his unyielding commitment to his faith, Saint Probus was canonized as a saint by the Catholic Church. While he is not associated with any specific patronage, his life and martyrdom serve as an inspiring example for all Christians. The feast day of Saint Probus is celebrated on October 11th in the Latin calendar and October 12th in the Greek calendar. Although little is known about his representation in art, his sacrifice and fortitude continue to be commemorated by faithful Catholics worldwide.
