Feast Day: January 14
Saint Potitus, also known as Potito, was born in Sofia, Bulgaria, during the early years of the Christian era. He was the son of a wealthy pagan family, but his life took a dramatic turn when he encountered the teachings of Christ and chose to convert to Christianity. It is believed that Saint Potitus performed a remarkable miracle that marked the beginning of his spiritual journey. He exorcised a demon from the daughter of Emperor Antoninus, demonstrating the power of his faith and the authority he had acquired through his devotion to Christ. However, this act of faith brought about dire consequences for Saint Potitus. Emperor Antoninus, instead of recognizing the divine intervention and conversion, had Potitus arrested on the grounds of his Christian beliefs. He was subjected to severe tortures in an attempt to make him renounce his faith, but Saint Potitus remained steadfast in his devotion to Christ. Ultimately, Saint Potitus was sentenced to death by beheading with a sword in the diocese of Naples, Italy. His execution was a testament to his unwavering commitment to his newfound Christian faith, even in the face of persecution. After his execution, Saint Potitus was buried in the marshy area of the river Carapelle. Later on, some relics of the saint were enshrined in Ascoli Satriano, Italy, where they became objects of veneration for the faithful. As a result, Saint Potitus is considered the patron saint of Ascoli Satriano and is honored each year on his feast days, which fall on January 14th and January 13th on some calendars. Although Saint Potitus was not formally canonized by the Catholic Church, his martyrdom and subsequent veneration predate the establishment of the canonization process. Therefore, he is recognized as a saint within the Pre-Congregation era. The influence of Saint Potitus extends beyond the borders of Italy. He is also revered in other places associated with him, such as the cities of San Potito Sannitico, San Potito Ultra, Tricarico, and the diocese of Tricarico. These locations hold special significance in honoring the memory and spirit of this brave martyr who sacrificed his life for his Christian convictions.
