Biography

Saint Pompilius Maria Pirrotti, also known as Domenico, was born on 29 September 1710 in Montecalvo Irpino, Benevento, Kingdom of Naples (in modern Italy). He was the sixth of eleven children born to Jerome and Donna Pirrotti, with his father being a well-known lawyer. In his mid-teens, Domenico felt a calling to religious life, and on 2 February 1727, he joined the Piarists, a religious order dedicated to education. He took the name Pompilio Maria of Saint Nicholas and made his solemn profession on 25 March 1728 in Brindisi, Italy. After his profession, he continued his studies in various locations, including Naples, Chieti, and Melfi. In 1733, Pompilio Maria started his teaching career in Turi, Italy. He was ordained a priest in the Archdiocese of Brindisi on 20 March 1734. Throughout his life, he became known for his great devotion to Mary and the Sacred Heart, as well as for the austerity of his own lifestyle. One of Pompilio Maria's notable contributions was his tireless work with young people in central Italy. He dedicated himself to educating and guiding them, instilling in them the values of faith and virtue. His passion for teaching and mentoring the youth exemplified his commitment to the Piarist mission. Saint Pompilius Maria Pirrotti died on 15 July 1766 in Campo Salentina, Apulia, Italy, of natural causes. He was buried in Apulia, and his relics were enshrined in a chapel in the Santuario San Pompilio Maria Pirrotti in Campi Salentina, Italy, in 1966. The veneration of Saint Pompilius Maria Pirrotti began on 17 November 1878 when Pope Leo XIII declared his heroic virtues. He was beatified on 26 January 1890 by the same Pope. His canonization took place on 19 March 1934 by Pope Pius XI, with the celebration held at Saint Peter's Basilica in Vatican City, Rome, Italy. Saint Pompilius Maria Pirrotti is the patron saint of Campi Salentina, Italy, honoring his deep connection to the community. His life and dedication to education, youth, and the faith continue to inspire and bless countless individuals who seek his intercession.
