Saint Poemen, also known as Pastor or Shepherd, was a prominent figure among the early Christian hermits in the desert of Skete in Egypt. He gained renown as the leader of a group of hermits who lived in the abandoned ruins of a pagan temple at Terenuth. Poemen was born around the early 4th century and dedicated his life to a strict and disciplined asceticism. Saint Poemen was highly regarded for his steadfast commitment to his spiritual practices. He believed in keeping a rigorous schedule, allowing himself and his fellow monks only four hours of sleep each day. The rest of their waking hours were spent engaging in various chores, prayers, and study. This strict lifestyle contributed to their spiritual growth and strengthened their devotion to God. In the year 407, the region where Saint Poemen and his fellow hermits resided was targeted and invaded by barbarians. This invasion claimed the lives of many, but Saint Poemen was one of the few survivors. This experience only deepened his commitment to his faith, and he later became known to encourage frequent reception of the Holy Communion for all believers. Saint Poemen's strength lay not only in his disciplined way of life but also in his wisdom and way with words. He was renowned for his insightful sayings and teachings, which resonated with the people who sought his guidance.
