Saint Pierrefrançois Néron was born on 21 September 1818, in Bornay, Jura, in the diocese of St-Claude, France. He was the fifth of nine children in his family. From a young age, it was evident that he had a fervent spirit and a strong desire to serve God. Pierrefrançois Néron's religious journey began when he entered seminaries in Nozeroy and Vaux-sur-Poligny, France, where he received his education and formation. He showed great academic potential and a deep devotion to his studies. Recognizing his dedication and potential for religious service, he became a member of the Paris Foreign Missions Society. After completing his studies, Pierrefrançois Néron was ordained as a priest in 1848. His heart was set on becoming a missionary, and he was sent to Vietnam to spread the teachings of the Catholic faith. He embraced his mission with a passionate zeal and wholeheartedly dedicated himself to the Vietnamese people. Upon arriving in Vietnam, Saint Pierrefrançois Néron quickly became involved in the work of the Paris Foreign Missions Society. He took on the role of director of the Society's seminary, where he not only taught philosophy but also translated textbooks to aid in the education of his students. Despite his heavy workload, he maintained a deep spiritual life, finding solace and strength in his faith amidst the challenges he faced. In 1860, Emperor Tu-Duc unleashed a wave of persecutions against Christians in Vietnam, posing a severe threat to the Catholic community. Saint Pierrefrançois Néron had to go on the run, constantly hiding from the imperial anti-Christian forces. Unfortunately, he was eventually betrayed to the authorities and captured. The saint endured unimaginable suffering during his captivity. Imprisoned in a cage for three months, he endured starvation for three weeks and was subjected to various forms of torture. Despite the physical and psychological torment he endured, Saint Pierrefrançois Néron remained steadfast in his faith and refused to renounce his beliefs. On 3 November 1860, Saint Pierrefrançois Néron was finally martyred for his faith. He was beheaded in Son Tây, Ha Tay, Vietnam, and his severed head was callously thrown into the river. His body was buried at the execution site, but in 1880, his remains were re-interred in the crypt of the church that was built next to the site where he was executed. Saint Pierrefrançois Néron's dedication to spreading the Gospel, his commitment to education, and his unwavering faith in the face of persecution have made him an inspiration to many. He was venerated on 2 August 1908 by Pope Pius X, who declared him a martyr. Then, on 2 May 1909, Pope Pius X beatified him, and finally, on 19 June 1988, Pope John Paul II canonized him, recognizing his sanctity and his sacrifice. Today, Saint Pierrefrançois Néron is venerated as a patron saint of young people in the diocese of Jura, France. His life serves as a powerful testimony to the enduring power of faith and the strength that can be found in the midst of arduous trials.
