Biography

Saint Piaton of Tournai, also known as Piat, Piato, or Piatone, was an early Christian priest who played a significant role in the evangelization of Tournai, Belgium, and Chartres in Gaul (modern France). Born in Benevento, Italy, Saint Piaton was ordained by the renowned Saint Dionysius the Areopagite. As a devoted servant of God, Saint Piaton dedicated his life to spreading the teachings of Christianity and converting souls to the faith. He ventured to Tournai and Chartres, where he tirelessly preached the Gospel, making a lasting impact on the local communities. During his time, the Roman Empire was experiencing a period of persecution under Emperor Maximian Herculeus. Unfortunately, Saint Piaton could not escape the turmoil, and he ultimately faced martyrdom for his unwavering commitment to his faith. In a brutal act of violence, a soldier attacked him, splitting his skull. This occurred around the year 286 in Tournai, Belgium. The significance of Saint Piaton's life and the impact of his martyrdom did not go unnoticed. In the 7th century, Saint Eligius discovered his remains, recognizing the holiness and sanctity encompassing Saint Piaton. As a tribute, Saint Eligius made a reliquary to honor the martyr's body. Saint Piaton's body was subsequently buried in Chartres, France. Remarkable miracles were reported to have occurred at his tomb, testifying to the intercession of this holy martyr. As time passed, the veneration of Saint Piaton grew steadily, solidifying his place among the saints. It is important to note that Saint Piaton was canonized prior to the establishment of the formal canonization process known as the Congregation for the Causes of Saints. Therefore, he holds the title of Pre-Congregation saint. Saint Piaton is recognized as the patron saint of both Seclin, France, and Tournai, Belgium. These communities hold him in high regard, honoring his memory and seeking his intercession as a powerful advocate before God. His feast day is celebrated on the 1st of October, a day to give thanks for his life and to seek inspiration from his unwavering commitment to the Christian faith.
