Biography

Saint Philip of Palermo, also known as Saint Philip of Agira, was born to a wealthy couple of the Settimi family in Palermo, Italy. The couple had initially accepted that they would not bear children and sought divine guidance from Saint Philip of Agira regarding the disposal of their estate. Mystically, Saint Philip of Agira informed the man that he should hold onto the estate as their prayers would be answered, and they would soon be blessed with a son. True to his words, the couple was overjoyed when their son Philip was born, and they named him in gratitude to the saint who had foretold his birth. From an early age, young Philip took to heart the guidance given to him by Saint Philip of Agira when he was confirmed by the saint at the age of nine. He was exhorted not to become entangled in worldly pursuits but rather to joyfully serve God. Philip wholeheartedly embraced this teaching and dedicated his life to fulfilling this mission. As he grew older, Philip used his family's fortune to build churches, support clerics, and further the spread of the Gospel through evangelization efforts. He understood the importance of investing in the spiritual welfare of others and gladly sacrificed his wealth for this purpose. After the passing of his parents, Philip gave away the remainder of his wealth to the poor, truly following in the footsteps of Christ in living a life of radical generosity. He then returned to Agira, the birthplace of Saint Philip of Agira, to devote himself as a spiritual student of his namesake. Philip emboldened his commitment to spiritual growth and sought to imitate the virtues exhibited by Saint Philip of Agira. Saint Philip of Palermo's profound faith and selfless actions touched the lives of many. His profound generosity and dedication to serving God earned him a place of honor among the faithful. Recognizing his sanctity, Cardinal Giannettino Doria added him to the calendar of the Diocese of Palermo, Italy in 1611. Later, in 1887, Pope Leo XIII confirmed the cultus of Saint Philip of Palermo, further endorsing his veneration. Although he does not have a designated patronage, Saint Philip of Palermo continues to inspire believers with his spirit of selflessness and devotion to God. Saint Philip of Palermo's feast day is celebrated on May 12th, providing an opportunity for the faithful to honor his life and seek his intercession in their own spiritual journey. Though pre-congregation, his canonization and recognition by the Church serve as a testament to the impact he had during his lifetime and the continued importance of his example for believers today.
