Saint Phanxicô Xaviê Hà Trong Mau, also known as Francis Xavier Mau, was an esteemed Lay Dominican who lived in the apostolic vicariate of East Tonkin during the early 19th century. He was born around 1790 in Ke Rien, Thái Bình, Vietnam. Mau dedicated his life to the Catholic faith and became a catechist, playing a significant role in spreading the teachings of the Church among the local population. However, his unwavering commitment to his faith would eventually lead him to a path of persecution, suffering, and martyrdom. During the reign of Emperor Minh Mang, the Catholic community in Vietnam faced severe persecution. Emperor Minh Mang implemented a strict anti-Catholic policy, suppressing the Church and punishing those who refused to renounce their faith. In this challenging climate, Saint Phanxicô Xaviê Hà Trong Mau fearlessly continued his mission of spreading the Gospel. It was precisely Saint Mau's devotion and refusal to abandon his Christian beliefs that led to his eventual imprisonment and torture. For his unwavering faith and refusal to renounce Catholicism, he was executed, becoming a martyr for the faith. He was venerated on 2 July 1899 by Pope Leo XIII through a decree of martyrdom, acknowledging his sacrifice and dedication to the faith.
