Death: December 1, 18
Saint Phêrô Truong Van Ðuong, also known as Peter Truong Van Duong, was a faithful layman who lived in the apostolic vicariate of West Tonkin in Vietnam during the early 19th century. Born around 1808 in Ke So, Hà Nam, Vietnam, not much is known about his early life. However, he would later become a significant figure in the Catholic Church as one of the Martyrs of Vietnam. Phêrô Truong Van Ðuong dedicated his life to spreading the teachings of Catholicism as a catechist. As a layperson, he was not ordained as a priest but rather worked alongside the clergy to evangelize and educate others about the Catholic faith. During this period in Vietnam, the Christian community faced severe persecution from the ruling regime, which sought to eliminate the spread of Christianity. Phêrô Truong Van Ðuong was well aware of the risks involved, yet he remained steadfast in his faith and committed to his mission. He fearlessly preached the Gospel and catechized the local people, even in the face of threats to his own safety. Finally, on 18 December 1838, while serving in the town of Son Tây, Ha Tay, Phêrô Truong Van Ðuong was captured and martyred for his unwavering faith. He willingly embraced a martyr's death, standing firm in his beliefs until the end. The heroic virtue and sacrifice displayed by Phêrô Truong Van Ðuong did not go unnoticed. On 2 July 1899, Pope Leo XIII recognized his martyrdom, declaring him venerable. A year later, on 27 May 1900, Pope Leo XIII beatified him, acknowledging his sanctity and the enduring impact of his life. Finally, on 19 June 1988, Pope John Paul II canonized Phêrô Truong Van Ðuong, officially recognizing him as a saint of the Catholic Church. As a canonized saint, he serves as an inspiring example of faith, courage, and perseverance, particularly for the Vietnamese Catholic community. Though the specific patronage of Saint Phêrô Truong Van Ðuong is not documented, his life and martyrdom serve as a source of strength and inspiration for all who face persecution and adversity throughout the world. His feast day is commemorated on 18 December, and he is also celebrated on 24 November as one of the Martyrs of Vietnam.
