Biography

Saint Vicente Shiwozuka De La Cruz, also known as Vincentius Shiotsuka or Vincentius of the Cross, was a Dominican priest and martyr. He was born around the year 1576 in Nagasaki, Japan, during a time when Christianity faced persecution in the country. Despite the dangers, Vicente embraced his faith and dedicated his life to serving God and his fellow believers. Vicente joined the Dominican Order and became a priest, known for his deep devotion and compassion towards others. He tirelessly preached the Gospel and ministered to the spiritual needs of Catholics in Nagasaki, despite the ongoing persecution by the Tokugawa shogunate, which sought to eradicate Christianity from Japan. On September 29, 1637, a significant event took place in Vicente's life. Alongside 205 other Christian martyrs, he was arrested during the Shimabara Rebellion, a large-scale uprising against the shogunate's rule. The rebellion was mainly composed of oppressed peasants and unemployed samurai who longed for religious freedom. Imprisoned together with his fellow Christians, Vicente's faith only grew stronger. He continued to provide spiritual guidance and comfort to those around him, even under the most adverse circumstances. Despite the immense pressures to renounce their faith, Vicente, along with his companions, remained steadfast in their commitment to Christ. Finally, on the fateful day of September 29, 1637, Vicente Shiwozuka De La Cruz, along with his fellow believers, was led to Nishizaka, a hill in Nagasaki. There, they were subjected to brutal tortures and ultimately executed for their refusal to renounce their Christian beliefs. Their martyrdom was a testament to their unwavering faith and love for Christ. The Catholic Church recognized the exemplary life and witness of Vicente Shiwozuka De La Cruz and his companions. On October 11, 1980, Pope John Paul II issued a decree of martyrdom, officially recognizing their heroic sacrifice. Subsequently, on February 18, 1981, Pope John Paul II beatified Vicente and his fellow martyrs, affirming their blessed status within the Church. Finally, on October 18, 1987, Pope John Paul II canonized Vicente Shiwozuka De La Cruz, officially declaring him a saint of the Catholic Church. His feast day is celebrated on September 29th each year, commemorating his martyrdom and the ultimate triumph of his faith. As a Catholic saint, Saint Vicente Shiwozuka De La Cruz serves as a shining example of unwavering faith, commitment to Christ, and dedication to the Church. His life story inspires believers to remain faithful even in the face of persecution and challenges, reminding us of the enduring power of God's love and grace.
