Biography

Saint Phêrô Nguyen Van Hien, also known as Peter Nguyen Van Hieu, was a layman catechist who lived during the 19th century in the apostolic vicariate of West Tonkin, which is present-day Vietnam. He was born around 1783 in Ðong Chuoi, Ninh Bình, Vietnam. Phêrô Nguyen Van Hien dedicated his life to spreading the Catholic faith in a time of great persecution. During the reign of Emperor Minh Mang, the Christian community in Vietnam faced severe oppression and were subjected to persecution for their beliefs. Despite the risks, Phêrô Nguyen Van Hien fearlessly preached the Gospel and catechized those who were interested in learning about Christianity. His devotion to his faith eventually led to his imprisonment and torture for a period of three years. The authorities specifically targeted him, hoping to force him to renounce Christianity. However, Phêrô Nguyen Van Hien remained steadfast in his faith and refused to denounce it. His unwavering commitment to Christ and refusal to betray his beliefs served as a powerful testimony to all who witnessed his suffering. On the 28th of April, in the year 1840, Phêrô Nguyen Van Hien faced the ultimate sacrifice for his faith. He was beheaded in Ninh Bình, Vietnam, as a martyr for the Catholic Church. Despite the cruelty and pain inflicted upon him, he demonstrated profound courage and unwavering conviction until his last breath. The profound impact of Phêrô Nguyen Van Hien's witness did not go unnoticed. On the 2nd of July in 1899, Pope Leo XIII recognized his martyrdom by issuing a decree of martyrdom, officially venerated him. Pope Leo XIII further honored him by beatifying him on the 27th of May in 1900. Finally, on the 19th of June in 1988, Pope John Paul II canonized Phêrô Nguyen Van Hien, declaring him a saint of the Catholic Church. Even though he may not have been officially assigned a patronage, Saint Phêrô Nguyen Van Hien continues to inspire and intercede for all those who face persecution and challenges for their faith. Saint Phêrô Nguyen Van Hien's life serves as a vibrant example of unwavering faith, resilience in the face of adversity, and the dedication to martyrdom for the sake of Christ. His story encourages believers to stand firm in their beliefs and to trust in the Lord, even in the most challenging circumstances.
