Feast Day: July 10
Death: July 1, 10
Saint Phêrô Nguyen Khac Tu, also known as Peter or Pietro, was a layman catechist in the apostolic vicariate of West Tonkin, which is located in modern-day Vietnam. He was born around the year 1808 in Ninh Bình, Gia Long, Vietnam. Little is known about his early life and family. During the 19th century, Vietnam faced intense religious persecution under the rule of Emperor Minh Mang. As a devout Catholic, Phêrô dedicated his life to spreading the teachings of the Catholic faith and providing catechesis to the local Vietnamese community. Phêrô's dedication to his faith put him in great danger, as the government heavily suppressed Catholicism and sought to eradicate it from Vietnam. Despite this, he fearlessly continued his mission, knowing the risks involved. Phêrô's charisma and innate ability to connect with people allowed him to effectively communicate the message of God's love and compassion to those around him. Tragically, Phêrô's tireless efforts to spread the Word of God ultimately led to his martyrdom. On July 10, 1840, in Ðong Hoi, Quang Bình, Vietnam, he was captured by imperial authorities who vehemently opposed the Catholic Church. He was cruelly and brutally strangled to death for refusing to renounce his faith and betray his fellow believers. The story of Phêrô's martyrdom spread throughout Vietnam and even reached the ears of the Catholic Church. Impressed by Phêrô's unwavering commitment to his faith and his sacrifice for the Gospel, Pope Leo XIII declared him venerable on July 2, 1899, through a decree of martyrdom. A year later, on May 27, 1900, Pope Leo XIII beatified him, recognizing his heroic virtues. The decades following Phêrô's beatification brought about significant changes in the perception of his sanctity. The Catholic faithful continued to venerate him, and his intercession was credited with numerous miraculous favors. Eventually, on June 19, 1988, Pope John Paul II canonized him, officially declaring Phêrô Nguyen Khac Tu a saint. Although information about Phêrô's personal life is limited, his extraordinary dedication to the Catholic faith and his courage in the face of severe persecution have made him a revered figure. As a saint, he serves as a powerful example of unwavering faith and martyrdom, inspiring countless Catholics around the world. While Phêrô's specific patronage is not known, he is honored annually on July 10 and is also recognized as one of the Martyrs of Vietnam on November 24.
