Biography

Saint Phêrô Ðoàn Công Quý, also known as Peter, was a Catholic priest hailing from the diocese of Vinh Long, Vietnam. He was born around 1826 in Hung Ðinh, Thuan An, Bình Duong, Vietnam. His life is a testament to the unwavering faith and martyrdom during the persecutions of Emperor Tu-Duc. Phêrô Ðoàn Công Quý dedicated his life to serving God and the Catholic community as a priest. He was known for his compassion, kindness, and devotion to his flock. However, during the oppressive reign of Emperor Tu-Duc, being a devout Catholic was seen as a threat to the state, leading to persecution of the faithful. In the face of this dreadful situation, Phêrô Ðoàn Công Quý did not waver in his commitment to God, continuing to provide spiritual guidance and support to his parishioners. In 1859, after enduring seven months of imprisonment, he was sentenced to death by beheading, becoming a martyr for his faith. The execution took place on 31 July 1859 in Châu Ðoc, An Giang, Vietnam. Although the physical pains and sufferings inflicted on Phêrô Ðoàn Công Quý were immense, he remained steadfast and unwavering in his faith until the very end, exemplifying a true martyr's spirit. Phêrô Ðoàn Công Quý's sacrifice did not go unnoticed by the Catholic Church. In recognition of his martyrdom and unwavering faith, he was canonized on 19 June 1988 by Pope John Paul II. His feast days are celebrated on 31 July and 24 November, along with the other Martyrs of Vietnam. As a martyr, Saint Phêrô Ðoàn Công Quý serves as an inspiration to all Catholics, reminding them of the immeasurable value of their faith. Despite the challenges and persecutions faced, he remained loyal to his beliefs and dedicated himself to the service of God and his community.
