Biography

Saint Petrus Zhao Mingzhen, also known as Baiduo, Zhao Mingzhen Petrus, or Pietro Zhao Mingzhen, was a devoted Layman Christian in the apostolic vicariate of Southeastern Zhili, China. He was born around 1839 in Beiwangtou, Shenzhou, Hebei, China, and spent his life serving his faith in the midst of trying times. During the Boxer Rebellion, a violent anti-foreign and anti-Christian movement in China, Saint Petrus Zhao Mingzhen valiantly sought to protect and rescue women and children who were being targeted by the rebels. Despite the risks involved, he fearlessly offered his aid, displaying immense courage and compassion. Tragically, on July 3, 1900, while trying to save these innocent lives, Saint Petrus Zhao Mingzhen was martyred in his hometown of Beiwangtou, Shenzhou, Hebei, China. His selfless act of sacrifice in the face of persecution exemplified his unwavering commitment to his Christian faith. Recognizing his heroic virtues and martyrdom, Pope Pius XII declared Saint Petrus Zhao Mingzhen venerable on February 22, 1955. Just two months later, on April 17, 1955, Pope Pius XII further honored him by beatifying him. Finally, on October 1, 2000, Saint Petrus Zhao Mingzhen was canonized by Pope John Paul II. This canonization highlighted his exemplary life of faith, serving as an inspiration to believers around the world. As a martyr and patron saint, Saint Petrus Zhao Mingzhen serves as a shining example of courage, selfless love, and devotion to Christian principles.
