Biography

Saint Peregrinus of Amiterno, also known as Ceteo, Ceteus, Cetheus, Cetteo, Cetteus, Pellegrino, and Pelligrinus, was a remarkable figure in the early Catholic Church. He served as the Bishop of Amiterno, a city that is now known as San Vittorino, in Italy. His life and ministry were marked by his unwavering faith and commitment to justice. Born in the 6th century, Saint Peregrinus dedicated his life to serving God and His people. He was known for his gentle and compassionate nature, always seeking ways to help those in need. As bishop, he worked tirelessly to shepherd his flock and guide them in their spiritual journey. During his time as Bishop of Amiterno, the Arian Lombards, who held heretical beliefs, were in power. Despite the potential risks, Saint Peregrinus fearlessly stood against their oppressive rule. One particular incident highlighted his unwavering commitment to justice and mercy. Saint Peregrinus had come to learn of a prisoner who had been condemned to death by the Arian Lombards. Filled with compassion, he found the courage to approach the authorities and pleaded for mercy on behalf of the condemned man. However, his pleas fell on deaf ears as the Arian Lombards rejected his request. Undeterred by the refusal, Saint Peregrinus continued to advocate for the prisoner's life. His unwavering determination and his unyielding faith posed a threat to the Arian Lombards, who saw him as a threat to their authority. In a cruel turn of events, Saint Peregrinus was met by the hands of his oppressors. He was drowned in the River Aterno in the Abruzzo region of Italy in the year 597. His martyrdom further solidified his place as a revered figure within the Catholic Church. Although Saint Peregrinus did not leave behind any specific representations or symbols, his legacy and example of selfless love live on. His feast days are celebrated on June 13th and October 10th in Pescara, Italy. Saint Peregrinus of Amiterno remains an inspiration to all believers, demonstrating the importance of standing up for justice and mercy even in the face of adversity. Though his name may not be as widely known as some other saints, his courageous actions and ultimate sacrifice continue to shine as a beacon of hope and faith in a world in need of God's love and compassion.
