Biography

Saint Paulus of Autun, also known as Paul and Paolo, was a dedicated evangelizing priest who played a significant role in spreading Christianity in Gaul. Unfortunately, not much information has survived about his early life or family background. Born in the 3rd century in Italy, he felt a calling to devote his life to God and the service of the Church. Inspired by his deep faith and devotion, Saint Paulus embarked on a missionary journey to Gaul, an area that encompasses modern-day France. He was accompanied by his fellow missionary, Saint Reverianus of Autun, and ten other companions whose names have regrettably been lost to history. Together, they set up their base in Autun, a city in eastern France. During their time in Gaul, Saint Paulus and his companions vigorously preached the Gospel, sharing the message of Christ's love and salvation with the local population. Their tireless efforts to bring about Christian conversions and establish faith communities were met with great success, resulting in the growth of Christianity in the region. Sadly, their missionary work took place during a tumultuous period of conflict between Emperor Aurelian and the locals in Gaul. In the midst of these turbulent times, Saint Paulus and his companions became martyrs for their faith. Emperor Aurelian, in an attempt to suppress any opposition and maintain control, ordered the execution of these devoted servants of God. Saint Paulus and his companions were beheaded around the year 273 in Autun, France. Following their martyrdom, they were buried in Autun, and their grave became a site of devotion for many faithful believers. Over time, a monastery and church were established around their final resting place, serving as a constant reminder of their sacrifice and the spreading of the Christian faith. Although little is known about the physical aspect or specific representation of Saint Paulus, his spiritual legacy endures. While not officially recognized as the patron saint of any specific cause or group, his faith, dedication, and martyrdom make him a powerful intercessor for all who face persecution or difficulties in their Christian journey. Despite lacking the formal canonization process as it exists today, Saint Paulus has been venerated as a saint from ancient times. His recognition as a saint was carried out before the formal establishment of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, commonly referred to as Pre-Congregation. Each year on June 1st, the feast day of Saint Paulus of Autun is celebrated, honoring his life, martyrdom, and unwavering commitment to spreading the Gospel.
