Saint Paulus Chen Changpin, also known as Baolu, was born around 1838 in Xingren, Guizhou, China. He began his spiritual journey as a seminarian in the apostolic vicariate of Guizhou, dedicating his life to the service of God and the Church. During this time, China was experiencing a period of intense persecution towards Christians. The Qing Dynasty government sought to suppress the growth of Christianity, and as a result, many faithful were subjected to persecution and martyrdom. Saint Paulus Chen Changpin became one of these courageous individuals who faced immense hardships for his unwavering faith. At some point in his life, Saint Paulus Chen Changpin found himself imprisoned in a cold, damp cave. It was within these grim confines that he endured unimaginable torture and suffering due to his refusal to renounce his beliefs. The details of the extent of his persecution and the exact circumstances of his death are unfortunately not known. Despite the hardships he faced, Saint Paulus Chen Changpin remained steadfast in his devotion to Christ and the Catholic Church. His unwavering faith, even in the face of extreme adversity, stood as a powerful testament to his commitment to the Gospel. Pope Pius X recognized the martyrdom of Saint Paulus Chen Changpin on 2 August 1908, issuing a decree that venerated him. On 2 May 1909, Pope Pius X beatified him, acknowledging his sacrifice for the faith and holding him up as an example of Christian virtue. Finally, on 1 October 2000, Pope John Paul II canonized Saint Paulus Chen Changpin, officially declaring him a saint of the Catholic Church. As a canonized saint, he is venerated on two separate feast days: 29 July and 28 September, alongside the other Martyrs of China. Although Saint Paulus Chen Changpin's life is shrouded in mystery and limited in historical documentation, his unwavering faith and martyrdom serve as an inspiration to believers around the world.
