Biography

Saint Palerio of Telese, also known as Saint Palerio of Benevento, was a Bishop of Telese, Italy, during the early medieval period. Not much is known about his early life and background, but historical records indicate that he was a highly respected figure in the Catholic Church. Saint Palerio served as the bishop of the city of Telese, located in the Benevento region of southern Italy. He was known for his wisdom, holiness, and dedication to the well-being of his flock. During his tenure as bishop, he worked tirelessly to promote the faith, administer the sacraments, and teach the Gospel to the people of Telese. One notable aspect of Saint Palerio's life was his close association with another saint, Saint Equizio of Telese. Saint Equizio served as Saint Palerio's deacon, and together, they labored to bring spiritual nourishment and guidance to the people of their diocese. The duo was known for their harmonious collaboration and mutual respect, setting an example of unity and holiness for the faithful. Saint Palerio is believed to have died and was originally buried in the church of San Palerio in Telese. However, the exact date of his death is unknown. Interestingly, the location of his grave remained lost until a vision in 1167 revealed its whereabouts. The vision prompted a search, and the grave of Saint Palerio was rediscovered, attracting a great number of pilgrims who sought his intercession. During the demolition of the old church in 1712, Saint Palerio's relics were miraculously rediscovered. The remains were then enshrined under the high altar of the church of Saint John the Baptist on March 5, 1713. This enshrinement allowed for continued veneration of the saint and invoked his intercession for the faithful who sought his help. While Saint Palerio's representation is unknown, his feast day is celebrated on June 16th, an occasion when the faithful remember his life and strive to emulate his dedication to the faith. Although he has not been officially recognized as the patron saint of any particular cause or group, many people turn to him to seek guidance and help in their spiritual journeys. Saint Palerio of Telese has not yet been canonized by the Catholic Church. In fact, the process of canonization had not been established during his time. Therefore, he is considered a saint "pre-congregation," which means his sanctity is recognized but without the formal canonization process that was established later. In summary, Saint Palerio of Telese was a devout and holy bishop who dedicated his life to the spiritual well-being of his diocese. Alongside his deacon, Saint Equizio, he tirelessly preached the Gospel, administered the sacraments, and cared for his flock.
