Biography

Saint Pacificus of San Severino, also known as Saint Pacificus Divini, was born on March 1, 1653, in San Severino, Italy. He was the son of Antonio M Divini and Mariangela Bruni, both of whom tragically passed away when Pacificus was just three years old. After the death of his parents, he was raised by his uncle. Growing up, Pacificus showed great devotion to God and a strong desire to serve Him. Recognizing his spiritual inclinations, he joined the Franciscan Order in December 1670, dedicating himself wholeheartedly to a life of humility, poverty, and obedience. His profound love for the Lord led him to pursue theological studies, and he was ordained as a priest in 1678. Due to his deep theological knowledge and virtuous character, Pacificus was appointed as a professor of philosophy, teaching novices in the Franciscan order. His abilities as an instructor garnered him great respect and admiration from his students and superiors alike. Pacificus' teachings not only focused on academic knowledge but also on the practical application of faith in daily life. In addition to his role as an educator, Pacificus was also a talented preacher, renowned for his powerful sermons. He enthusiastically served as a missionary, ardently spreading the Word of God to people in various parishes. His captivating oratory skills and unwavering faith touched the hearts of many, leading them to conversion. Despite his dedicated service to God, Saint Pacificus encountered numerous health challenges throughout his life. His body gradually weakened, and he became lame, deaf, and blind. However, instead of allowing his physical condition to hinder his spiritual life, Pacificus embraced his infirmities as an opportunity for deeper intimacy with God. Saint Pacificus spent the final 29 years of his life in a contemplative state, offering his sufferings as a sacrifice for the salvation of souls. Despite his physical limitations, he had a deep spiritual connection with the divine. He received mystical visions and experienced ecstasies, establishing a profound spiritual bond with God. Pacificus was also known for his reputation as a miracle worker, with numerous accounts of miraculous healings and conversions attributed to his intercession. Many sought his prayers and help, and he humbly attributed any miracles to the power of God working through him. Saint Pacificus of San Severino died on September 24, 1721, in his hometown of San Severino, Italy. His death marked the end of his earthly suffering and his union with God in eternal glory. Recognizing his holiness and the miracles associated with his intercession, Pope Pius VI beatified Pacificus on August 4, 1786. Later, on May 26, 1839, Pope Gregory XVI canonized him as a saint. Although Saint Pacificus of San Severino does not have a specific patronage assigned to him, he remains an inspiration to all who are suffering physically or spiritually. His life teaches us the value of embracing our hardships, offering them in union with Christ's suffering, and trusting in God's providence to work miracles in our lives. Saint Pacificus' feast day is celebrated on September 24 each year, reminding us of his holy example and inviting us to seek his intercession in our own lives.
