Biography

Saint Oudoceus, also known as Eddogwy, Oudaceus, Oudecus, Oudoc, and Oudocée, was born in Brittany, France. He was the son of a local leader who dedicated him to God at birth. Oudoceus grew up in Wales and became a dedicated monk, following a life of spirituality and service. Oudoceus was also the nephew and student of Saint Theliau, who significantly influenced his spiritual formation. Under the guidance of his uncle, Oudoceus deepened his commitment to God and developed a strong devotion to the Church. Recognized for his piety, humility, and wisdom, Oudoceus was appointed as the Abbot of Llandeilo Fawr in Carmarthenshire, Wales. As the abbot, he oversaw the spiritual growth and well-being of his community of monks. In approximately 580, Oudoceus was appointed as the third bishop of Llandaff, Wales. In this role, he contributed significantly to the growth and organization of the Church in the region. Despite his ecclesiastical responsibilities, Oudoceus remained committed to a life of simplicity and selflessness. During his time as bishop, Oudoceus faced various challenges. One notable event was the assassination of a prince named Cynedu by Mauric, the king of Glamorgan. In response to this act, Oudoceus courageously excommunicated King Mauric. While Oudoceus encountered difficulties throughout his ministry, he received support from many faithful individuals, including King Mauric himself.
