Biography

Saint Oncho of Clonmore, also known as Onchu or Onchuo, was a renowned Catholic poet and pilgrim who dedicated his life to preserving the rich tradition and heritage of the Irish saints. Born in Ireland during the sixth century, Oncho embarked on a lifelong journey, traveling across the country to explore and document the memorials and shrines dedicated to the saints. As he roamed from place to place, Oncho meticulously collected relics and information about the lives of the saints, ensuring that their stories and legacies would be passed down through generations. His devotion to this noble cause earned him great respect among the people of Ireland, who held him in high regard as a caretaker of their religious heritage. After years of tireless pilgrimage, Oncho eventually decided to retire to the peaceful Clonmore monastery. Recognizing the immense value of his collection, he bequeathed his relics to the monastery, where they would be enshrined and preserved for future generations. In this act of selflessness, Saint Oncho ensured that the memories and devotion to the saints would continue to flourish. Oncho spent the remaining years of his life in the serene atmosphere of Clonmore, where he further dedicated himself to prayer and contemplation. While Saint Oncho's canonization predates the formal process established by the Catholic Church, his sanctity is unquestionable. Today, Saint Oncho is celebrated on the feast days of February 8th and, on some calendars, April 15th, allowing the faithful to honor and remember his profound contributions to their spiritual heritage.
