Saint Odo of Urgell, also known as Eudes or Odoricus, was born around 1065 as the oldest son of a Spanish count of Pallars Sobirà. Little is known about his early life, but it is believed that he grew up in a noble and devout family.
Odo initially pursued a career in the military and served as a soldier. However, he felt a deep calling to dedicate his life to the service of God and the Church. With this noble purpose in mind, he decided to join the clergy and was ordained as an archdeacon in Urgell, Spain.
His commitment to his faith and his exceptional spiritual qualities soon gained him recognition within the Church community. As a result, Odo was appointed as the Bishop of Urgell in 1095. He embraced this position with great humility and dedication, carrying out his responsibilities with utmost care and compassion.
Saint Odo of Urgell is particularly revered for his outstanding care for the poor. He exhibited a deep concern and genuine love for those in need, ensuring that their basic necessities were met and offering them spiritual guidance and support. His generosity and selflessness became symbols of hope and comfort for the less fortunate.
As a bishop, Odo also played a significant role in strengthening the spiritual and moral fabric of the community. Recognizing his remarkable virtues and the impact of his life, the Church canonized Odo in 1133, declaring him a saint. His feast day is celebrated on July 7th each year to honor and remember his profound contributions to the Church and society.
