Biography

Saint Nuño De Santa Maria Álvares Pereira, also known as Nuño of Saint Mary, Nonius Alvares Pereira, or Nuno Álvares Pereira, was born on June 24, 1360, in Cernache do Bonjardim, Sertã, Castelo Branco, Portugal. He was a cousin of the founder of the noble Braganza family and played a significant role in Portuguese history as a constable of the kingdom of Portugal, a knight, and a prior in the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem. Throughout his career, Saint Nuño fought for and became a hero of Portuguese independence, battling against the Castilian forces during the crisis of 1383-1385. His military prowess and leadership were instrumental in securing Portugal's autonomy during this challenging time. Saint Nuño was married, but tragically became a widower. Following his wife's death, he decided to dedicate himself to a life of religious devotion. In 1423, he became a lay-brother in the Order of Friars of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel at Lisbon, Portugal, taking the name Nuño of Saint Mary. Despite his noble background and military achievements, he humbly undertook the meanest duties in the friary, including begging alms from door to door. Known for his deep piety and devotion to Our Lady, Saint Nuño founded a monastery in Lisbon. He lived a life of prayer, penance, and dedication to his faith. The saint's spiritual journey was marked by his commitment to the Carmelite way of life and his unwavering devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. Saint Nuño De Santa Maria Álvares Pereira passed away on November 1, 1431, Easter Sunday, at the Carmelite monastery in Lisbon, from natural causes. Unfortunately, his tomb was lost during the devastating earthquake of 1755. Saint Nuño's sanctity and exemplary life were officially recognized by the Catholic Church years after his death. He was beatified on January 23, 1918, by Pope Benedict XV, who confirmed his cultus. Later, on April 26, 2009, Saint Nuño was canonized by Pope Benedict XVI, affirming his status as a saint in the Catholic Church. Although not associated with any specific patronage, Saint Nuño's life and legacy serve as inspiration for those seeking a life of devotion, humility, and unwavering faith. His feast days are celebrated on November 1 and November 6 by the Carmelites and the Order of Malta, respectively. Additionally, the Discalced Carmelites honor him on April 1. Saint Nuño De Santa Maria Álvares Pereira remains a revered figure in Portuguese Catholic history.
