Saint Nowa Mawaggali, also known as Noah Mawaggali or Noè Mawaggali, was a prominent figure in the history of Catholicism in Uganda. He was a member of the Ngabi clan and is recognized as one of the Martyrs of Uganda, who courageously embraced their faith and ultimately sacrificed their lives during the Mwangan persecutions. Born in Buganda, Uganda, Nowa Mawaggali grew up in a time when the region was facing tremendous challenges due to the arrival of Arab Muslim traders and the influence of the Buganda court. However, despite these cultural and religious tensions, Nowa Mawaggali decided to convert to Catholicism, a faith that deeply resonated with his spirit. As a newly converted Catholic, Nowa Mawaggali was an active and fervent believer, devoted to spreading the teachings of Christ within his community. He played a crucial role in attracting and guiding others towards the Catholic faith, contributing to the growth of the Church in the region. Unfortunately, this period was also marked by intense persecution against Christians, particularly those who had embraced Catholicism. The king of Buganda, Mwanga II, viewed the increasing influence of Christianity as a threat to his rule and authority. He cracked down on Catholic converts and executed several believers who refused to renounce their faith. Nowa Mawaggali, along with numerous other Catholics, faced unimaginable challenges and hardships during this time of persecution. On 31 May 1886, he was brutally martyred. He endured the pain of being stabbed with a spear and subsequently torn apart by wild dogs. His unwavering faith and resolute commitment to his beliefs became an inspiration for many others, even in the face of such brutal persecution and violence. Recognizing the incredible sacrifices and devotion of Nowa Mawaggali and the countless other martyrs, Pope Benedict XV declared their martyrdom on 29 February 1920. Their heroic witness to their faith led to their beatification on 6 June 1920 by the same Pope. Later, Pope Paul VI canonized them as saints on 18 October 1964 in Rome, Italy. Saint Nowa Mawaggali is venerated as a symbol of steadfastness, resilience, and unwavering commitment to one's beliefs. He serves as a role model for Catholics in Uganda and beyond, reminding them of the sacrificial nature of faith and the profound strength that can be found in a relationship with God. Though his specific patronage is not recorded, many believers look to him for intercession and guidance in their own lives. Saint Nowa Mawaggali's life and death continue to inspire generations of Catholics to live out their faith fearlessly and to stand strong in the face of adversity.
