Saint Nicolas Bùi Ðuc The, also known as Nicolas The, was a lifelong layman in the apostolic vicariate of East Tonkin, which is located in modern-day Vietnam. He was born around the year 1792 in the village of Kiên Trung, Nam Ðinh. During his lifetime, the Christian community in Vietnam faced severe persecutions under the reign of Emperor Minh Mang. Nicolas lived through this turbulent period and witnessed the oppression and suffering endured by his fellow Christians. Despite the challenges, he remained steadfast in his faith and dedication to the teachings of the Catholic Church. In a particularly trying time, Emperor Minh Mang issued an order demanding that Nicolas stomp on a cross to demonstrate his contempt for Christianity. However, Nicolas steadfastly refused to comply with this blasphemous command. He courageously chose to stand up for his beliefs and became a martyr for the faith. On June 12, 1839, in Thua Thiên, Vietnam, Nicolas Bùi Ðuc The was martyred for his refusal to renounce his faith.
