Biography

Saint Nebridius of Ègara, also known as Nebridi or Nebridio, was a revered Catholic saint and a significant figure in the early medieval Church. Born in Girona, Spain, he was the brother of Saint Justus of Urgell, Saint Elpidius of Huesca, and Saint Justinian of Valencia. Their collective devotion to their faith had a profound impact on the Christian community of their time. Nebridius received an excellent education in theology and biblical studies, becoming a renowned Bible scholar and commentator. Inspired by his brothers' holy lives, he decided to dedicate himself to the service of God. Nebridius joined the Benedictine order and lived as a monk, embracing a life of prayer, contemplation, and asceticism. Throughout his religious life, Saint Nebridius actively participated in several church councils, reflecting his deep commitment to the well-being and unity of the Church. He attended the Council of Tarragona in 516, the Council of Girona in 517, the 2nd Council of Toledo in 527, and most likely the Council of Barcelona in 540. In recognition of his scholarly expertise and exceptional piety, Nebridius was appointed as the Bishop of Ègara in 516, a position he held until 527. During his episcopate, he diligently served his flock, caring for their spiritual needs with love and compassion. Nebridius not only focused on preserving and spreading the teachings of the Church but also worked diligently to promote unity and concord among the clergy and faithful. After his tenure in Ègara, Saint Nebridius became the Bishop of Barcelona, Spain, around the year 540, continuing his tireless efforts to lead and shepherd the Church. While in this role, he proved himself to be a zealous pastor, providing guidance, support, and pastoral care to the people of Barcelona. His profound wisdom and saintly example inspired many to embrace the faith and deepen their spiritual lives. In the twilight years of his life, Saint Nebridius continued to serve faithfully until his passing around the year 545. His contributions to the Church as a Bible scholar, commentator, monastic, and bishop left an indelible mark on the Christian community of his time. Saint Nebridius' commitment to upholding the teachings of Christ and fostering unity among believers exemplified his devotion to God and his fellow brethren. Although not officially recognized as a patron saint, Saint Nebridius remains a spiritual guide and inspiration to all those who seek wisdom, scholarly knowledge, and a greater understanding of the Scriptures. His feast day is celebrated on February 9th annually, commemorating his holy life and the contributions he made to the growth and development of the Church.
