Biography

Saint Nazario of Koper, also known as Nazario of Capodistria, was a revered bishop of Koper, which is located in modern-day Slovenia. Born around 475 in Elpidium (Böste), not much is known about his early life. However, he is renowned for his dedicated service as the bishop of Koper for approximately 30 years, starting around the year 524. During his tenure, Saint Nazario worked diligently to spread the teachings of Christianity throughout the region, offering solace, guidance, and support to the faithful. As the bishop, he was responsible for overseeing the spiritual needs of his flock, ensuring that the Catholic faith flourished in Koper. In 1380, during the War of Chioggia, Koper fell victim to plundering, resulting in the theft of the relics. However, in 1422, Saint Nazario's relics were finally returned to their rightful place. They were then enshrined in a splendid marble altar sarcophagus within the cathedral of Koper, where they remain to this day. Saint Nazario of Koper's unwavering faith and selfless service to his community have earned him a place among the saints. He was officially canonized by the Catholic Church, although it was before the formal establishment of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints.
