Biography

Saint Modestus of Carinthia, also known as Modestus of Salzburg, was a Benedictine monk and influential bishop during the early medieval period. He was born in the 7th century in the region of Carinthia, which is now part of modern-day Austria. However, specific details about his early life and family background are not widely known. Modestus is primarily recognized as a spiritual student of Saint Virgilius at the Abbey of Saint Peter in Salzburg, Austria. He received a comprehensive religious education under the guidance of Saint Virgilius, who later became the Bishop of Salzburg. Modestus' virtuous character and dedication to his spiritual studies impressed Saint Virgilius. After completing his education, Modestus was ordained a priest and continued his service in Salzburg. His exceptional administrative skills and fervent missionary spirit prompted the appointment of Modestus as the Bishop of Carinthia, Austria, by Saint Virgilius himself. This appointment occurred during a period when the region was in need of evangelization and reform.
