Biography

Saint Guillermo Courtet, also known as Guillaume, Vilhelm, William, or Thomas of Saint Dominic, was a Dominican priest and missionary to Japan. He was born around 1590 in Sérignan, Languedoc, France. Little is known about Guillermo Courtet's early life, but it is understood that he felt a calling to serve God and his fellow brothers and sisters in a foreign land. With a fervent desire to spread the teachings of Christianity, he joined the Dominican Order and dedicated himself to missionary work. In the early 17th century, Japan was facing a period of anti-Christian sentiment and persecution. However, this did not deter Guillermo Courtet from his mission. He embarked on a journey to Japan, ready to face any challenges that lay ahead. Once in Japan, Guillermo Courtet's faith and determination quickly became evident. Despite the hostile environment and constant threats to his own safety, he fearlessly preached the Good News and spread the love of Christ wherever he went. However, his missionary work drew the attention of local authorities who sought to eradicate Christianity from their land. Guillermo Courtet's dedication and influence made him a primary target. In Okinawa, he was arrested for his unwavering faith and was soon martyred for his refusal to deny his beliefs. On September 29, 1637, at Nishizaka, Nagasaki, Guillermo Courtet faced his ultimate sacrifice and offered his life for the sake of Christ. His steadfast devotion to his faith and his commitment to the Gospel remained unwavering until his last breath. Centuries after his death, Guillermo Courtet's virtuous life and martyrdom were recognized by the Catholic Church. On October 11, 1980, Pope John Paul II, in a decree of martyrdom, officially declared him venerable. Beatification followed on February 18, 1981, further affirming his holy example. Finally, on October 18, 1987, Pope John Paul II canonized him as a saint, bestowing upon him the honor and recognition he deserved. Saint Guillermo Courtet stands as a testament to the steadfastness of faith, even in the face of persecution and martyrdom. His life and sacrifices continue to inspire and serve as an example for Christians all over the world, reminding us of the importance of remaining faithful to our beliefs, even in the most challenging circumstances. Although little is known about his specific patronages, Saint Guillermo Courtet's intercession is sought by those facing persecution, missionaries, and all who strive for unwavering faith in Christ.
