Biography

Saint Metrophanes of Byzantium was a prominent figure in the Christian community during the fourth century. He was born as the son of Dometius, who was a convert to the faith, and hailed from a noble family with ties to the Byzantine Empire. Metrophanes' uncle was Emperor Probus, thereby giving him a close association with the imperial family. In his early years, Metrophanes dedicated himself to the priesthood, following in the footsteps of his father and older brother. He zealously served the church and became renowned for his piety, humility, and profound holiness. His reputation as a virtuous man began to spread throughout Constantinople and beyond. During this era, Emperor Constantine the Great was seeking to establish a new capital for the Roman Empire. It is believed that Metrophanes' exceptional character and devotion to his faith greatly influenced Constantine's decision to choose Constantinople as the new capital. This demonstrates the high esteem in which Metrophanes was held within the Christian community and the imperial court.
