Biography

Saint Severinus of Septempeda, also known as Severinus of Naples or Severino, was born in Septempeda (modern San Severino Marche, Italy). He was the brother of Saint Victorinus of Camerino, and together they were known for their generosity towards the less fortunate. The two brothers distributed their wealth to the poor in their area and later retired to live as hermits on Monte Nero, Italy. Their reputation for holiness spread, and in recognition of his spiritual gifts, Pope Vigilius ordered Severinus to become the Bishop of Septempeda, an area located in the Marches of Ancona, Italy. Severinus accepted the papal appointment and embarked on his episcopal duties with great zeal. As the Bishop of Septempeda, Severinus worked tirelessly to revive the faith in his diocese, leading to a profound transformation. The town, previously known simply as Septempeda, came to be called San Severino Marche in honor of his extraordinary impact on the community. Severinus dedicated himself wholeheartedly to the pastoral care of his flock, promoting religious education and encouraging a deep devotion to the teachings of the Catholic Church. He was known for his humility, his unwavering faith, and his commitment to serving others. Many sought spiritual guidance and advice from him, and he was respected and revered by both clergy and laity. Saint Severinus of Septempeda lived a life of prayer and self-denial, setting an example of holiness for all those around him. He was known for his austere lifestyle, spending countless hours in prayer and contemplation, seeking a closer union with God. Saint Severinus peacefully passed away in 550 of natural causes, leaving behind a legacy of faith and spiritual renewal. He was interred in the cathedral in San Severino Marche, Italy, where his relics became the focus of veneration by the faithful. During an incursion by the Goths, the relics of Saint Severinus were hidden in a side altar of the cathedral for protection. Eventually, the relics were taken to the site of his hermitage on Monte Nero, Italy, on November 3, 590. A church was built there, and his relics were enshrined in 944. Unfortunately, the relics were lost in 1197 due to invasions and upheavals in the region. However, on May 15, 1576, they were miraculously rediscovered, marking a significant event in the veneration of Saint Severinus. Saint Severinus of Septempeda was canonized before the official canonization process was established. As such, he is considered to have been pre-congregation. His life of dedication, selflessness, and love for God and others continues to inspire and guide the faithful. Today, Saint Severinus is recognized as the patron saint of Camerino-San Severino Marche, Italy, and the diocese of San Severino Marche. His memory and example serve as a reminder of the transformative power of faith and the profound impact one person can have on a community.
