These tales depict him as a former king of Mesopotamia who abdicated his throne in order to dedicate himself fully to the service of God as a wandering priest. According to some accounts, he encountered the pope at the time, who, upon recognizing his extraordinary holiness, appointed him as a bishop. One of the most captivating legends surrounding Saint Maurelius claims that during his first Mass as bishop, celestial choirs of angels joined in the sacred ceremony. These embellishments, while intriguing, should be regarded with caution as they were likely invented by later storytellers to enhance the saint's reputation and significance. While the narratives surrounding Saint Maurelius might be subject to skepticism, his role as the Bishop of Voghenza remains well-established. It is known that he faithfully fulfilled his duties as a shepherd of the Church in this region.
