Saint Maura of Ravenna, also known as Maura of Frisanco, was a faithful follower of Christ who lived during the third century in Ravenna, Italy. She is celebrated as a saint and martyr for her unwavering devotion to her faith, even in the face of persecution. Not much is known about Saint Maura's early life or her family background. However, historical accounts reveal that she served as a nurse to another saint, Saint Fusca of Ravenna. Saint Fusca, a young Christian girl, was martyred during the persecutions initiated by the Roman Emperor Decius. During this period, Decius issued edicts forcing Christians to renounce their faith and worship the Roman gods. Those who refused to comply faced severe punishment, including imprisonment, torture, and death. Saints Maura and Fusca were among the many Christians who defiantly remained steadfast in their beliefs, refusing to renounce their faith. It is believed that Saint Maura and Saint Fusca were both arrested and imprisoned for their Christian beliefs. Despite the hardships they faced, they continuously prayed and lifted each other's spirits, finding solace in their shared faith. Their unwavering devotion served as an inspiration to the imprisoned Christians around them. Eventually, the Roman authorities ordered the execution of Saint Maura and Saint Fusca. They were both martyred, laying down their lives for their faith. Saint Maura's martyrdom is thought to have taken place around the year 250 in Ravenna, Italy. Saint Maura's reputation as a faithful and courageous martyr quickly spread, and she became venerated by the local Christian community. Her sanctity was recognized even before the formal institution of the process of canonization, which is why she is considered a pre-congregation saint.
