During the persecutions under the Roman Emperor Maximian in the early 4th century, he bravely refused to renounce his beliefs. As a result, he faced severe persecution and ultimately met a martyr's death, sacrificing his life for his unwavering faith. Following his martyrdom, the relics of Saint Matthew were rediscovered on September 11, 1248. These holy remains were then enshrined at the church of San Fedele in Gravedona sul Lario, Italy. The church itself had been rebuilt in 1533 and was subsequently renamed in honor of both Saints Gusmeo and Matthew. In 1637, the relics of Saint Matthew were re-enshrined under the main altar of the church. A beautiful marble urn was crafted to house the sacred remains, ensuring their preservation and veneration for generations to come.
