Biography

Saint Martinluc Huin, also known as Min, Martín Lucas Huin, or Martino Luca Huin, was born on 20 October 1836 in Guyonvelle, Haute-Marne, France. He was one of ten children born into a devout vintner's family. From a young age, Martinluc showed a deep interest in theology and dedicated himself to studying the Catholic faith. In 1851, he began his theological studies under the guidance of returned missionaries. His passion for spreading the Gospel grew, and his devotion to serving God led him to be ordained as a diocesan parish priest on 29 June 1861. However, Martinluc felt a calling to a greater mission and decided to join the Société des Missions Etrangères, also known as the Paris Foreign Missions Society, on 20 August 1863. Following his new path, Martinluc was assigned to the missions in Korea and set off in 1864. Upon arriving in Chosun on 27 May 1865, Martinluc dedicated himself to understanding the language and customs of the Korean people. He joined efforts with Saint Marie-Nicolas-Antoine Daveluy to spread the teachings of Christ in the Nappo province. Later, he moved to the Dangjin province to continue his missionary work. Tragically, on 12 March 1866, Martinluc and many other Christians in Korea became victims of the government's anti-Christian persecution. He was arrested, imprisoned in Seoul, and subsequently executed for his unwavering faith and dedication to his mission. Martinluc Huin was martyred for spreading the Gospel and sharing God's love with the people of Korea. Saint Martinluc Huin is honored as one of the Martyrs of Korea, known for their courage and sacrifice. His feast day is celebrated on 30 March, along with the other Korean Martyrs, and he is also remembered on 20 September. Pope Paul VI, recognizing his exemplary life and martyrdom, decreed the veneration of Martinluc Huin on 4 July 1968. On 6 October 1968, Pope Paul VI beatified him, and he was later canonized as a saint on 6 May 1984 by Pope John Paul II. As a saint, Saint Martinluc Huin serves as an inspiring example of resilience, faith, and selfless dedication to sharing the Gospel with others, even in the face of persecution and hardship. Although not associated with any specific patronage, he continues to be venerated by faithful Catholics for his martyrdom and his unwavering commitment to Christ.
